"O Mandarim" - Eça de Queirós

Esta obra, de Eça de Queirós, foi publicada pela primeira vez em folhetim, no Diário do Reino, em 1880. “O Mandarim” decorre num cenário exótico, o Oriente, que serve de pano de fundo à história de Teodoro. Este homem era um simples trabalhador do Ministério do Reino que, embora tivesse uma vida modesta, não passa grandes privações. No entanto, sonhava com o luxo do mundo dos ricos. Um dia, aliciado pelo Diabo, Teodoro faz uma campainha tilintar. Esta campainha irá concretizar o seu sonho de obter uma imensa fortuna. Contudo, nem tudo é um mar de rosas, pois é dito a Teodoro que se tocar a campainha um rico Mandarim do império chinês cairá morto.

Esta novela é de fácil leitura, retratando a natureza humana na sua pior faceta. O desejo por uma vida de luxo é, ainda hoje, aquele que leva a cometer verdadeiros crimes contra a vida humana.

This work of Eça de Queirós, was first published as a brochure, in  The Journal of the Kingdom in the year of 1880. "The Mandarin" occurs in an exotic setting, the Orient, which serves as a backdrop to the story of Theodore. This man was an ordinary worker of the Ministry of the Kingdom who, although living a modest life, wasn't facing a life with to mutch sacrifices. However, he dreamed of the luxury of the world in which the riches lived. One day, lured by the devil, Theodore makes to ring a bell. This bell has the power to realize his dream of getting him an immense fortune. However, not everything is a "bed of roses". It is said that if Teodoro choses to ring the bell a wealthy Mandarin that lives in the Chinese Empire will fall dead.
 
This novel is easy to read, portraying human nature at its worst. The desire for a life of luxury is, today, one of the reasons that leads people to committing real crimes against human life.
